Help Deaf Barista Competitor & Glitter Cat Cajal Rutti Get To The Denver Qualifying Event

Apr 04, 2023

With the second Qualifying Event of the 2023 US Coffee Championships season less than one month away in Denver, competitors are waist-deep in competition prep: putting together scripts, creating signature beverages, sourcing coffees. But the not-so-best-kept secret about competing is that it costs quite a bit of money. For one competitor—Cajal Rutti, the owner of DC's Steam Valve Espresso, current Glitter Cat, and deaf coffee professional—additional financial accommodations are needed, both for her routine and to keep her fledgling cafe running. That's why Rutti is raising funds via GoFundMe, and the campaign is live now.

Per the GoFundMe page, Steam Valve first opened in May 2022, "with a mission to provide job opportunities to marginalized communities, particularly deaf and hard-of-hearing." Having hosted pop ups in that time, the company is seeking to expand its menu offering beyond espresso-based drinks with the addition of pour-over and batch brew equipment. Then, to make matters for financially complicated, Rutti was selected to be part of the Glitter Cat Barista program, with the agreement that she would compete in a 2023 Qualifying Event.

As a Barista Championship competitor who is also deaf, Rutti's routine will require additional accommodations in the form of a Cued English translator—a visual form of communication different from American Sign Langauge that Rutti describes as "a visual Morse code for phonemes." This on top of paying for flights to Denver as well as lodging and food, etc.

With the GoFundMe, Rutti is seeking to raise $10,000 to help defray the costs of competing with running a new coffee company. In less than a week's time, the campaign has raised just under $4,000 of its goal. But with the Qualifying Event taking place at the beginning of March, the amount of time to reach the $10,000 is limited. So if you are able, consider donating to Rutt's campaign. And if you aren't able to help out financially, consider sharing her GoFundMe with your social network. For more information, visit Cajal Rutti's GoFundMe page.
